Gymnopédie No. 1

by Erik Satie

An early-intermediate piece from the Impressionist period, in D major, and about 3 minutes to play.

About this edition

Satie marked this "Lent et douloureux" (slow and painful) — a spare, unhurried alternation of simple block chords and a wandering melody that deliberately avoids Romantic-era drama. Written in 1888, decades ahead of the minimalist and ambient music it now sounds like it predicted.

There's almost nothing technically hard here — the entire challenge is resisting the urge to rush or over-emote. Play it slower than feels natural at first; the stillness is the point, not a means to an end.
