Satie marked this "Lent et douloureux" (slow and painful) — a spare, unhurried alternation of simple block chords and a wandering melody that deliberately avoids Romantic-era drama. Written in 1888, decades ahead of the minimalist and ambient music it now sounds like it predicted.
