March: Song of the Lark

by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

An upper-intermediate piece from the Romantic period, in G minor, and about 1 minute and 13 seconds to play.

About this edition

The third movement ("March") of Tchaikovsky's The Seasons, Op. 37a (1876), a set of twelve character pieces each depicting a month of the Russian year -- this one, subtitled "Song of the Lark," represents March with a wistful, ornamented birdsong motif over a steady walking accompaniment.

Isolate the grace-note/turn figures in the right hand before adding the pedal -- the piece's character comes from a light, singing touch on those ornaments, not from speed.
