Happy Birthday to You

by Mildred J. Hill (melody)

A beginner piece from the Early Modern period, in C major, and about 30 seconds to play.

About this edition

Originally written as a classroom greeting song ("Good Morning to All") by kindergarten teacher Patty Hill and her sister, composer Mildred J. Hill, in Louisville, Kentucky, and first published in 1893. The tune became "Happy Birthday to You" through decades of informal re-lyricing before becoming the world's most-sung song.

A genuine first-lesson piece: use it to practice reading a simple melody in one hand while holding steady block chords in the other -- the same coordination skill every larger piece in this catalog builds on, without any of the technical demands.
